The Trust
The Balaji Medical and Educational Trust was set up in
November 1997,in Chennai with a view to help kidney failure
patients and their families.
Thus, first of all kidney problems are not easily detected
in time. and, even after they are detected, the treatment is
very expensive, unaffordable by most. To add to this woes,
the patient and his/her family are bombarded with all sorts
of myths and half-truths. By the end of it, the patient and
his family are fatigued, confused and depressed.
Realising the enormity of the complex problems, and the
urgency with which it has to be tackled, Dr.Rajan Ravichandran,
Nephrologist and Dr.P.B.Sivaraman, Urologist, who have been
treating kidney failure patients for the last 2 decades,
decided to help the patients and their families in whatever
ways they could.
Thanks to the munificence of the patients of the two doctors
, the Trust was able to collect enough funds to buy a
haemodialysis machine worth Rs. 5 lakhs on which some
economically-weak patients are put. This is but a beginning.
The Trust has many more plans for those needing help. It
intends to help the needy by:
- Subsidising the cost of dialysis.
- Subsidising the cost of transplantation.
- Subsidising the cost of post-operative, life-sustaining drugs.
Given the high cost of renal transplantation, only a
minority of those suffering from kidney failure in India
can afford it. Dialysis is also beyond the means of many.
Under the circumstances, though the Trust will try to reach
out to as many renal failure patients as possible, Doctors
Ravichandran and Sivaraman realise that prevention of renal
disease assumes overriding importance. In many cases, the
simple checking of the urine for albumin and blood for urea
and creatinine estimations can alert to the possibility of
a kidney failure.
Thus, to diagnose early kidney problems among the
unsuspecting populace, the Trust plans to hold 'Nephrology
Camps' in and around Chennai, to begin with. At these camps,
people would be tested for albumin in the Urine, and urea
and creatinine estimations in the blood. These camps are
also intended to spread awareness about kidney diseases.
Most important is to educate the transplant patients,
who are bombarded with all sorts of myths. The Trust plans
to counsel the patients before and after transplantation
and, more importantantly, the families of the patients , who play
a major role in helping the patient's recuperation and
return to normal life.
